GENERAL

In addition to General Liability, Automobile, Workers Compensation, and Office Contents coverages, the post production company has specialized insurance needs that should be insured by specialized insurance policies.

PROPERTY COVERAGE

Electronic equipment can be insured in a variety of ways. From least expensive to most comprehensive. The coverage you need depends on a number of factors including:

  1. Is the equipment mobile?
  2. Do you rent the equipment to others?
  3. What kind of risks are you willing to take?
  4. How old is the equipment?
  5. Will you suffer a loss of income if your property is damaged?

Your insurance agent needs to know the details of your operation and what you want to accomplish with your insurance in order to advise you on what kind of property policy form best suits your needs.

BAILEES COVERAGE

When you take another person's property into your custody, you create a "bailment" and are legally responsible for that property. If the projects in your possession are damaged or lost, you are accountable.

Many producers carry insurance to "re-shoot" a project that is damaged or lost during post production. However, some projects will be brought to post production by an advertising agency or other party. In these cases, there may be no insurance on the negative film/ video tape. If they are smart, they will try to make the post production company responsible for any damage to they project. There is insurance available to cover the post production company's exposure.
